The short version
Markie is a local-first application. Your files stay on your machine. We don't collect, store, or have access to any of your saved assets. There is no account, no cloud storage, and no tracking inside the app.
The Markie desktop app
The Markie macOS app stores all data locally on your computer in a folder you choose. This includes your saved assets, thumbnails, metadata, and catalog data. None of this data is sent to us or any third party.
- No account or login required
- No personal data or asset data ever leaves your machine
- Optional anonymous usage ping (no personal data), off by default — you choose whether to enable it so we can estimate active users
What Markie connects to
Markie makes a few optional network calls. No personal data or asset data is ever transmitted.
- Update check — on launch, Markie checks GitHub for new versions. Only a small JSON manifest is fetched; nothing is sent. You can disable this in Settings.
- Anonymous usage ping (off by default) — only if you opt in, Markie sends — on launch and once a day — a random anonymous identifier, the app version, and your operating system so we can estimate how many people actively use Markie. It carries no personal data, nothing about your assets, and we never store your IP address. You choose whether to enable it when you first accept the Terms, and can change it anytime in Settings.
- License validation (Pro users only) — on launch, Markie verifies your license key with LemonSqueezy. Only the license key and an instance identifier are sent. Free users make no license-related network calls.
That's it — no tracking, no profiles, nothing tied to your identity. With the update check and the anonymous usage ping both disabled, a free-tier Markie installation makes zero outbound connections.
Chrome extension
The Chrome extension communicates only with the Markie desktop app running on your local machine. It does not send data to any external server. The extension requires permissions to read page content in order to detect and save images, videos, and PDFs that you explicitly choose to save.
Read the full Chrome Extension Privacy Policy.
AI tagging with Ollama
Markie offers optional AI-powered tagging and descriptions using Ollama, which runs entirely on your local machine. Your assets are processed locally — no images or data are sent to any cloud AI service. This feature is completely optional and disabled by default.
MCP integration
The MCP server runs locally and provides a bridge between Markie and AI tools like Claude. It reads from your local Markie library and does not transmit your data externally. What you share with an AI assistant through MCP is governed by that assistant's own privacy policy.
Cloud sync (optional)
If you choose to store your Markie library in a Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud folder, those services will sync your files according to their own privacy policies. This is entirely your choice — Markie works fully offline with a regular local folder.
