Chrome Extension Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 16, 2026

The short version: Markie saves images, videos, and PDFs from web pages to your own computer. All data stays on your machine — nothing is sent to external servers or third parties.

1. What Markie Is

Markie is a Chrome extension that lets you save visual assets (images, videos, PDFs, and page screenshots) from web pages to your local Markie desktop application. The extension communicates exclusively with the Markie app running on your computer at localhost:3210.

2. Data We Collect

When you save an asset, the extension sends the following information to the Markie desktop app on your computer:

DataPurpose
Asset file (image, video, or PDF)The file you chose to save
Source URLWhere the asset was found, so you can revisit it
Page URL and titleContext about which page you saved from
Source domainOrganising saved assets by website
File type, MIME type, file sizeCategorising and displaying assets correctly
Page screenshot (when saving a full page)A visual snapshot of the page you chose to capture
Meta description (when saving a full page)A brief description from the page's metadata

3. Data Stored Locally by the Extension

The extension stores a single authentication token in Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local). This token is used to communicate with the Markie desktop app on your computer. No other data is stored by the extension itself.

4. Where Your Data Goes

All data is sent exclusively to the Markie desktop app running on your own computer (localhost:3210). No data is transmitted to external servers, cloud services, or third parties.

The extension does not use analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or any external services. There are no network requests to any server other than your local machine.

5. When Data Is Collected

Data is only collected when you explicitly take an action:

  • Right-clicking an asset and selecting “Save to Markie”
  • Clicking the “Save” button in the extension popup
  • Clicking the “Save page” button to capture a full-page screenshot

The extension never collects data passively or in the background. No browsing history, keystrokes, or page content is recorded.

6. Browser Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions, each for a specific purpose:

PermissionWhy it's needed
activeTabAccess the current tab's URL and title when you save an asset
contextMenusAdd “Save to Markie” to the right-click menu
scriptingScan the page for saveable assets and capture screenshots
storageStore the local authentication token
tabsGet tab information to display in the popup and coordinate saves
localhost:3210Communicate with the Markie desktop app on your computer

7. Website Content Access

The extension's content script runs on web pages to enable asset detection and saving. It accesses:

  • Image, video, and link elements to find saveable assets
  • CSS background images on elements larger than 300×300 pixels
  • Page meta tags (description) when capturing a full page

The content script does not read or collect page text, form inputs, passwords, cookies, or any personal information displayed on the page.

8. Data Sharing

We do not share, sell, or transfer any data to third parties. Since all data stays on your local machine, there is nothing to share.

9. Data Retention

Assets saved through the extension are stored by the Markie desktop app on your local file system. You can delete any saved asset at any time through the Markie app. Uninstalling the extension removes the stored authentication token from Chrome.

10. Children's Privacy

Markie is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

11. Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
